Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim has elevated hatred of real-time strategy micromanagement to an art form. This long-long-long-awaited reenvisioning of the nine-year-old cult hit best known today as one of the last games to come out under the legendary MicroProse label yanks managerial duties out of your hands almost entirely and subs in a more ambiguous chain of command where you bribe the great unwashed into doing your bidding. Sniper Elite
It might be difficult to get excited about yet another World War II shooter on the PC, especially since there are already a bunch of great, similarly themed shooters already available. Call of Duty 2, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood, and Day of Defeat all came out within the last few months, they’re all great, and they’re all about World War II. Despite its bad timing, worn-out source material, and lack of exposure, Namco and Rebellion’s recent stab at the genre still does a lot to distinguish itself as a competent and thoughtfully designed shooter. Sniper Elite takes a different approach to the concept of storming beaches and mowing down Nazis. As the title implies, this is a game about being a sniper, and it requires a more methodical approach than simply popping a hot one in anyone wearing the wrong color uniform. That said, Sniper Elite does require a lot of patience, but dedicated marksmen will get a lot of satisfaction from the lengthy and challenging campaign.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos needs little introduction, and neither does Blizzard, the company that created it. The worldwide July 3 release of Warcraft III, which shipped about 5 million copies in its first run, seems like a suitably momentous occasion, given that the game itself is both so highly anticipated and has been such a long time in the making. Considering that many have long since preordered the game and that the remaining copies are likely to fly off the shelves, giving a critique of Warcraft III almost seems like a moot point. It’s like trying to convince someone whether or not to go see a movie like Star Wars: Episode II. Fortunately for those who intend to play it no matter what anyone says, they’ll find their time with Warcraft III to be very well spent. Sure, Warcraft III isn’t a revolutionary departure from the conventions of real-time strategy gaming. But it’s as good of an offering in the genre as there’s ever been, featuring a superb story, carefully refined gameplay, plenty of depth, the best online multiplayer mode in any real-time strategy game to date, and the excellent production values you’d expect from a Blizzard product. So if you’re looking for some validation to go with your preorder, there you have it.
